Dr. Andre Nel is named Chief of new Division of NanoMedicine at UCLA

January 22, 2007 - In light of the tremendous advances in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and the expected major impact on the diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare delivery, the Department of Medicine Executive Committee voted unanimously at its December 12, 2006 meeting to establish a Division of NanoMedicine.

NanoMedicine is the science and technology of diagnosing, treating, alleviating, and preventing disease and traumatic injury through the use of nanoscale operations in the human body. Operations at the nanoscale (one billionth of a meter) are incredibly powerful because all the interactive components and energy of the interacting components (physical and biological) take place through multiplicative interactions on their surface.

Andre Nel, MD, PhD, a member of our Department and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) was recruited as founder and Chief of this new Division. A major mission of this new Division will be to educate and train physicians in the principles and application of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Medicine.

The Division of NanoMedicine will play a lead role in bringing the world-class research opportunities in the CNSI to the doorstep of physicians who wish to implement this novel enabling technology in the diagnosis, imaging, and treatment of disease. The long-term vision is to establish new paradigms for the diagnosis and treatment of disease on a system wide scale that is not possible with current technology.
